Challenge
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) sought a solution to strengthen the competencies of its X-ray security screeners. With aviation threats becoming increasingly complex, GCAA aimed to assess and improve screener performance across object recognition, image complexity, and threat detection—while also identifying a scalable, cost-effective method to evaluate and certify personnel.
Solution
Symposit, in partnership with CASRA (Center for Adaptive Security Research and Applications), deployed X-Ray Tutor 5 (XRT5), a scientifically validated, web-based training and testing platform designed to elevate screener proficiency through an adaptive, data-driven approach.
XRT5 was developed by CASRA and enhanced by contributions from HumanLink, whose research on Human Factors Engineering shaped the platform’s core learning algorithms and technical features. This combination of applied science and operational insight ensures that training is not only effective, but grounded in how people best learn to detect threats.
XRT5 features:
- Individually Adaptive Training: Tailored difficulty levels adjusting to the trainee’s needs
- Scientific Learning Methodology: Incorporates object recognition, merging algorithms, and systematic threat assessment
- Actionable Feedback: Real-time evaluations and insights after each image
- Global Validation: Officially recognized by the German Federal Aviation Office and Police, and used in over 900 airports worldwide
For the Ghana deployment, Symposit provided the infrastructure to support a pilot study in collaboration with GCAA. Participants were split into two groups: one trained using XRT5 and the other serving as a control group. Both underwent pre- and post-study assessments to measure improvements in image interpretation and threat recognition.
Results
- Rapid Implementation: Deployed in under 3 days
- Cost Savings: Saved the client over $10,000 in hardware expenses through strategic consultation
- Performance Gains: Trainees using XRT5 demonstrated measurable improvements in image interpretation and object recognition and detection speed, validated through post-training assessments
- Operational Flexibility: XRT5’s browser-based design enabled secure access and ease of use with ensured scalability and minimal disruption
Key Metrics
- Deployment Time: < 72 hours
- Cost Savings: $10,000+
Conclusion
By deploying XRT4—developed by CASRA and enhanced through HumanLink’s research—GCAA advanced its screener training program with a modern, effective solution tailored to evolving aviation threats. With Symposit leading secure deployment and integration, this project set a precedent for how operational readiness and scientific training can work hand-in-hand to secure national infrastructure.
